The MG 4 — sold in Europe as MG4, built on SAIC's MG5 EH32 platform — has become one of the best-value hatchbacks in Europe. Its pack is now appearing on the used market in meaningful volumes.

Summary. MG 4 (SAIC MG5 EH32 platform, marketed as MG4 in EU) offers three battery variants: 51 kWh NMC Standard Range, 64 kWh NMC Long Range, and 77 kWh LFP Trophy Extended Range. All three retain the SAIC-designed BMS. Nominal pack voltage is ~400 V across variants. The BMS-EV controller sits on the vehicle CAN and re-encodes battery telemetry for the target inverter.

Pack topology and cell configuration

Original SAIC BMS

SAIC develops its own BMS in-house under the MG and Roewe brands. The master BMS unit reports SoC, SoH, cell voltages, temperatures and current on the vehicle HS-CAN bus. Cell balancing is passive, overvoltage and undertemperature cutoffs are enforced autonomously. Contactor sequencing is handled by the BMS — the BMS-EV controller only needs to keep the "ignition on" heartbeat active.

All three MG 4 pack variants are liquid-cooled through a serpentine cold plate under the modules. For residential reuse below 0.3 C, passive coolant fill is acceptable; sustained operation above 5 kW discharge benefits from a small 12 V pump keeping coolant circulating.

Is the MG 4 Trophy 77 kWh LFP a better choice than the 64 kWh NMC?

For cycle life yes — LFP delivers 3000+ full cycles vs 1500–2000 for NMC. For usable energy per kg the NMC is slightly better. For residential storage LFP is generally preferred if available.

Can I mix cells from a 51 kWh and 64 kWh pack?

No. Different cell chemistries and capacities cannot be balanced by the pack-level BMS.

What SoH should I expect from a used MG 4 pack?

Typically 88–94% after 2–3 years automotive use. Ex-fleet vehicles may show lower SoH but are cheaper.

Does the SAIC BMS enforce cell temperature limits?

Yes. Charging below 0 °C is blocked automatically; discharging is permitted down to about -15 °C at reduced current.

Are the 51 kWh and 64 kWh packs physically the same?

Same footprint, different module thickness. The 64 kWh is roughly 3 cm taller.

How do I distinguish LFP from NMC in a used pack?

By VIN or by pack label — the LFP Trophy pack carries a distinct SAIC part number. Cell chemistry can also be inferred from the resting cell voltage (LFP ~3.28 V/cell, NMC ~3.7 V/cell).

Does the pack need active balancing on first power-up?

Yes. Expect 24–48 hours of passive balancing (SAIC uses 60 mA shunt resistors) before the pack reaches uniform cell voltage.

Which inverter is cheapest match?

Deye SUN 12K-SG04LP3-EU HV is currently the lowest-cost single-phase-plus-backup option for a full MG 4 pack at around €1 400 retail.
