SMA Hybrid Inverters with Second-Life EV Batteries

SMA Solar Technology AG produces four inverter families relevant to EV second-life: Sunny Boy Storage (HV DC-coupled battery inverter, 100–550 V DC per sma.de datasheet — note: this is NOT a 48 V LV inverter as sometimes stated; the SBS 2.5 was an older LV variant now discontinued), Sunny Boy Smart Energy (HV single-phase hybrid), Sunny Tripower X (three-phase hybrid), and Sunny Tripower Smart Energy (three-phase HV hybrid).

What SMA hybrid inverters do. SMA covers four hybrid inverter families in Europe: Sunny Boy Storage 3.7/5.0/6.0 (HV DC-coupled battery inverter with 100–550 V DC input, 3.7–6 kW, per official SMA datasheet), Sunny Boy Smart Energy 3.6/4.0/5.0/6.0-50 (HV single-phase hybrid, 100–500 V DC battery port), Sunny Tripower X 12/15/20/25 (three-phase hybrid up to 25 kW), and Sunny Tripower Smart Energy 8.0/10.0 (three-phase HV hybrid). Battery communication is CAN 500 kbps using SMA-native protocol or Pylontech / BYD emulation depending on the model. Compatible EV packs range from 48 V Leaf-derived blocks (Sunny Boy Storage) to factory HV Tesla, BMW i3, and VW MEB (Smart Energy series).

About SMA

SMA Solar Technology AG is a German inverter manufacturer, headquartered in Niestetal near Kassel, in operation since 1981. SMA is the oldest inverter brand in the residential PV market and manufactures in Germany (Niestetal) and China (Denselow). Battery communication protocols are documented in "SMA Battery Communication CAN Protocol" (German + English), available to certified installers. SMA offers a 5-year standard warranty, extendable to 10 or 20 years.

Life projection methodology: calendar and cycle life projections above are estimated using published NCA/LFP/NMC degradation curves (Preger et al. 2020, Recurrent 2025 fleet data, Geotab 2023 EV battery health report) combined with typical residential cycling patterns (15–25 % daily DoD, 20–35 °C ambient). Individual pack performance depends on charging history, temperature exposure and cycle depth — always verify SoH before purchase and re-verify annually.

Heartbeat 1 Hz. Timeout 60 s. Fault codes: SBSE / STPSE display "3701" (BMS communication lost). SBS displays "Error 6501" on missed BMS heartbeat.

Which SMA model should I use for a Tesla Model 3 pack?

Sunny Tripower Smart Energy (STPSE 8.0-50 or 10.0-50) for three-phase installations, or Sunny Boy Smart Energy (SBSE 5.0/6.0-50) for single-phase homes. Cap SBSE charge target at 480 V to preserve headroom against the 500 V ceiling.

Can SMA handle a Nissan Leaf 40 kWh pack?

Yes, via Sunny Boy Storage in the common re-configuration where Leaf modules are paralleled to 48 V. Factory-voltage Leaf packs (~350 V on 62 kWh) fit Sunny Boy Smart Energy.

Does SMA support 800 V EV batteries?

No. The highest DC ceiling on the Smart Energy series is 500 V. Porsche Taycan, Audi e-tron GT, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 are outside this window.

What is the difference between Sunny Boy Storage and Sunny Boy Smart Energy?

Sunny Boy Storage (SBS) is AC-coupled, 48 V LV, no PV MPPT — retrofit product. Sunny Boy Smart Energy (SBSE) is a DC-coupled hybrid with PV MPPT and HV battery (100–500 V) — new-build product.

Can I use SMA Sunny Tripower X with a battery?

Not directly — STPX has no battery port. Add a separate battery inverter (SBS or SBSE) on the AC bus.

How does SMA compare to Deye or GoodWe on price?

SMA is 30–60% more expensive per kW than equivalent Deye or GoodWe. The trade-off is EU manufacturing, longer warranty (5–20 years), and SMA's Sunny Portal cloud service.

Which grid codes does SMA support?

EN 50549, VDE-AR-N 4105, VDE 0126-1-1, CEI 0-21, G98/G99, RD 1699, and country-specific codes for most European and Australian markets. Set at commissioning via SMA Sunny Explorer or the local web UI.
