BMS-EV Alternatives & EV Battery Controllers

Five credible alternatives exist for reusing complete EV battery packs as home storage. Each fits a different builder profile — from open-source DIY to pre-configured commercial. Here is what each does, where it fits, and the trade-offs.

The short version. There are five credible alternatives to BMS-EV for reusing complete EV battery packs: Battery-Emulator (open-source firmware, hardware-agnostic, DIY), Batrium BMS-16 (commercial low-voltage BMS for rebuilt packs), Orion BMS 2 (aftermarket EV-grade BMS for rebuilt packs), SimpBMS (open-source, Tesla-focused), and REC BMS (commercial low-voltage BMS). Battery-Emulator is the closest philosophical peer — BMS-EV builds on similar principles and ships pre-configured hardware. The others typically require disassembling the pack and installing a new BMS on the cells, which is a different engineering path.

Is BMS-EV a fork of Battery-Emulator?

BMS-EV builds on similar principles — keeping the original EV BMS in place and translating protocols to hybrid inverters. Battery-Emulator is a hardware-agnostic open-source firmware project by dalathegreat; BMS-EV is a commercial product with pre-configured hardware, tested combinations, and vendor support. We regularly contribute back to the open-source ecosystem when it makes sense.

Can I use Battery-Emulator firmware on BMS-EV hardware?

BMS-EV hardware runs its own firmware image. If you want to run open-source firmware on your own hardware, follow the Battery-Emulator GitHub instructions instead.

Which is cheapest?

Battery-Emulator on a €50 development board is the lowest sticker price. Total cost of ownership depends on your time: if you spend 100 hours debugging, the effective cost is much higher than a €500 pre-configured unit.

Which supports the most EV batteries?

By raw target count, Battery-Emulator's open codebase and BMS-EV's tested combinations are the two broadest for whole-pack reuse. Batrium, Orion, REC are unbounded on chemistry but require pack disassembly.

Do any of these support 800 V packs (Porsche Taycan, Hyundai Ioniq 5)?

Whole-pack support for 800 V PPE/E-GMP is still limited across every option — the constraint is hybrid inverter DC input range, not the BMS. See the individual battery pages for current status.

Can I get commercial support for open-source options?

Not officially through the project itself. Some third-party installers offer paid services around Battery-Emulator and SimpBMS.

What if my battery + inverter is not in the BMS-EV compatibility matrix?

Contact us. We regularly add new combinations. Battery-Emulator's open codebase is often faster to adapt if you cannot wait.

Which options are legal in the EU under the Batteries Regulation 2023/1542?

The regulation is agnostic on which controller you use — it governs the second-life reuse itself. All the options above are legal to use; documentation obligations fall on the installer/owner. See regulations.
