The short version. A complete second-life EV battery home storage system typically costs €4 000–€8 000 for 40–90 kWh of usable capacity — roughly 40–60% less than an equivalent new residential battery system (Tesla Powerwall, BYD Battery-Box, and similar). The pack is the largest line item (30–75% of total). The controller (~€500), the hybrid inverter (€1 500–€3 500), and installation labour (€500–€2 000) account for the rest. All figures below are indicative Q3 2026 EU pricing.

*A single Powerwall 3 stores ~13.5 kWh usable. Reaching 40 kWh requires three; reaching 75 kWh requires five or six, further raising the cost gap. This comparison is illustrative — regional pricing, PV subsidies and grid-tariff structures shift the answer.
Assume: 7 kW PV array; 5 000 kWh/yr self-consumption; grid import price €0.30/kWh; export price €0.08/kWh. A 40–75 kWh storage system typically shifts 60–80% of PV surplus into evening/overnight consumption.
ROI is sensitive to grid tariff structure (time-of-use vs flat), export price, self-consumption share, and any national subsidy. Run the numbers with your own tariff before committing.

Warning. A pack with 80% SoH at retirement will lose additional capacity in second life. NCA fades faster in cycled service than NMC or LFP. Size the pack with 20–30% headroom above your daily target so you still meet the target after 5–8 years of cycled use.

The controller is portable. The pack, inverter and BMS-EV combination has a working secondary market — a fully commissioned system typically resells for 40–60% of its build cost at 5 years.
Most household insurers require notification of a lithium storage system. Some raise the premium marginally; some require confirmation the enclosure is fire-rated and the installer is qualified. See regulations.
